More teams will try to earn a berth to a national tournament in a 25-team bracket at the 2019 Minnesota Softball Men’s D South State Tournament Aug. 3-4 at McQuillan Softball Fields in Rochester.
The top four finishers that don’t already have a national berth advance to USA Softball Northern Nationals. Four of the teams in the field are already qualified, and three of those squads open state with a bye.
Of the four previously qualified teams, only SMC Softball out of New Ulm did not receive a bye — they face Coors Light (South St. Paul) in the first round at 10:10 a.m. Willy McCoys (Bloomington) earned a bye and awaits the winner of MN Chill (Burnsville) and Kato Bombers (Mankato) — Willy McCoys won the Caswell Sports D tournament June 15, and topped fellow qualfiier MN Brew Crew in the final 17-11. MN Brew Crew (Geneva) plays the winner of Rounders Sports Bar and Grill (Mankato) and GHR (Eau Claire, Wis.). MN Monsters (St. Paul) plays the winner of SMC Softball and Coors Light.
The remaining first-round matchups feature Team Emond/Mulcahy (Bloomington) vs. GN Construction (Elgin), with the winner facing MN Mercenaries/Rosetown Legion (St. Paul); The Creek (Rose Creek) vs. MN Tropics (Apple Valley), with the winner facing LTD Brewing/Reapers (Bloomington); Ellingson/License Bureau/Mason City Motors (Owatonna) vs. Schofield Trucking (Trimont), with the winner facing Express/M&M Construction (Rochester); Portside (Woodbury) vs. Home Upgrades Swingers (Bloomington), with the winner facing the winner between Nasty Boys/OCC (Hayfield) and Jared Rudlong Construction/The Wanderers (Rochester); and Big Daddy Hacks (Fridley) vs. Culvers/MLD/Features (Holmen, Wis.), with the winner taking on Pollyanna/EAI/P5 (Mayer).
The final is set for 2:50 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, with a second championship to follow at 4 p.m. if necessary. Brackets can be found here.
